Sylvester 'Sy' A. Halsey

In Loving Memory 1922 - 2007

 

 

Sylvester “Sy” A. Halsey, age 85 of Austin, Minn., died Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born April 5, 1922 in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Charles and Cora (Rank) Halsey. When he was young his family moved to Wisconsin where he attended country school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 and then re-enlisted in 1946 and served until 1949. He married Dorothy Osbourne in January of 1951 in Austin. Dorothy died in 1957 and Sy later married Audrey Van Epps on May 3,1975 in the Westby Chapel at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin.

Sy worked for Hormel Foods for over 31 years and retired in 1982. He was a member of Austin Post #91, American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #1216, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and horses and he did volunteer work at the blacksmith shop at the fairgrounds for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Halsey, of Austin; children: Chuck (Terri) Halsey, of Lyle, Minn.; Barb (Gary) Haugstad, of Hayfield, Minn.; stepchildren: Debra (Guy) Wentzel, of Las Cruces, N.M.; John (Diane) Van Epps, of Juneau, Alaska; Russell (Jeanine) Birk, of Austin; Sharon (Dick) Harding, of Ellendale, Minn.; Shirley (Jim) Newkirk, of Elkton, Minn.; Janice Vaughn, of Pennsylvania; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Forslund, of Minneapolis, Minn.; brothers, Ellsworth Halsey, of Auburn, Wash. and Gene Halsey, of Big Timber, Mont.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dorothy, in 1957; sister, Margaret Pearson; brothers, Ray and Russell; step-children, Darryl Birk and Darlene Cole.
