1. Hans Ivarsson HINDERAKER,¹ son of Ivar NILSEN and Brønla TORESDTR, was born on 27 Aug 1826 in Farm 82 - Hinderaker, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway and died on 20 Apr 1905 in Farm 82 - Hinderaker, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway at age 78.

A transfer of ownership (Notarized Deed) of Norheim Farm, sub farm 6, from Lars Nilsson, the brother-in-law, to Hans Ivarson took place on 18 March 1848. Sub farm 4, owned by Lars was sub-divided to create sub farm 6. The cost of the property was 3 pail or 4 ort (old currency) 10 penny. [Lars Nilsson was married to Brynhild, Hans Ivarson's sister.] In 1875, Hans was at Hinderaker Farm with his family.

16 March 1854 Østen obtained an 18 year lease from Hans. According to the nephew of Hans Ivarson, Ivar Larson Norheim, Hans did not prosper at Norheim and in [1854] returned to Hinderaker Farm where he leased out the Norheim sub-farm, from afar.

[from the bygdebok of Avaldsnes Parish, volume 1 is stated a more likely reason for Hans leaving Norheim Gard and going back to Hinderaker Gard. ]

Hans managed sub-farm 13 at Hinderaker Gard from approximately 1858 to 1875. His brother, Nils, died and he maintained the farm until 1875, when his nephew Johannes was old enough to take over the farm. In 1865, he sowed 1/2 barrel barley, 4 barrels oats and 2 barrels of potatoes. That same year the following animals were reported to the tax collector; 1 horse, 4 cows, 8 sheep and 1 pig.

In 1875 Hans bought sub-farm unit number 15 which was a sub division of the farm owned by his brother, Tore Ivarsen. In 1875, Hans reported having 1 cow and 10 sheep. He sowed 1/8 barrel barley, 1/2 barrel oats and 1 1/2 barrel potatoes.

Hans married Eli Asselina HALVORSDTR,³ daughter of Halvor ENDRESON and Asselina TORSDTR, in 1850 in Karmøy, Norway. Eli was born on 12 Mar 1832 in Farm 125 - Spannhelgland, Avaldsnes, Norway,^⁴ died on 3 Jan 1916 in Hamilton County, Iowa at age 83, and was buried in Bethany Church Cemetery.

Upon the death of Hans Ivarson Hinderaker in 1905, Eli decided to go to the United States. This was a very grave decision, because she knew that she would never again lay eyes on her family in Norway. She decided to make the journey, however, because she wanted to see her family in the United States before she died. She, therefore, traveled to Hamilton County, Iowa in 1910, at the age of 78. Making this journey would be a huge undertaking for anyone, but for a 78 year old woman, a journey on an ocean liner, crossing the Atlantic, must have been very frightening. She left Liverpool on the S.S. Megantic on 15 March 1910. Also on that ship were three young men from Avaldsnes Parish and also going to the Radcliffe, Iowa area in the United States; Johannes Kjetland, age 21, Mathias Norheim, age 22 and Knut Skeie, age 18. The S.S. Megantic arrived at the Boston Port on 23 March 1910. She was greeted by her sons, Andrew and Nils, who accompanied her, the final distance across the country to Hamilton County, Iowa and the loving arms of her family. Eli spent her remaining years living with her son, the Andrew Hinderaker Family. In fact, she and Nils were recorded, on the 1910 federal census, as living at the Andrew Hinderaker farm, 30 April 1910, a little more than a month after Eli landed at Boston Port.

iii. Halvor Mathias HINDERAKER was born on 8 Sep 1857 in Farm 82 - Hinderaker, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway, died on 28 Aug 1944 in Hardin County, Iowa at age 86, and was buried in Radcliffe, Iowa.^⁸

iv. Nils HINDERAKER was born on 9 May 1860 in Farm 82 - Hinderaker, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway, died on 8 Mar 1917 in Hamilton County, Iowa at age 56, and was buried in Bethany Church Cemetery.

Second Generation

Ivar and Brønla took over ownership of the sub-farm, previously owned by the grandparents of Brønla. They got formal ownership of it, in the form of a royal deed, on 20 August 1830. They were sole owners of the 18 bucket sub-farm. In 1843, they allowed two of their sons to each lease half of the sub-farm. It was, therefore, formerly divided, creating sub-farm 14.

Third Generation

Nils married Liva Trulsdtr in 1756. Liva was born in 1731 and died March 3, 1783. Her will was probated that same year on July 19. Liva was the daughter of Truls Gjermundsen of Gaustad Farm in Tinn Parish. Truls was born between 1690 and 1703. He died in 1781. His wife Gunne Nilsdtr was born about 1700 and died in 1782. The estate was valued at 478 dollars (old norwegian currency).

Nils bought the farm from the widow of the former sub-farm owner. The deed was dated May 20,1766 and registered November 4 of the same year. The widow got pension provisions registered that same day. Jakob Leirdal later said that they had 12 units of land in butter. Nils and his family moved from Tinn to Helgeland in 1766. He moved onto Helgelandshaugen. His son took over the farm after him.

Kari married Torgeir SVEINSSON in 1716. Torgeir was born in 1690 in Farm 32 - Lisland, Seljord Parish, Telemark County and died in 1739 in Farm 32 - Lisland, Seljord Parish, Telemark County at age 49.

Stølsvik (sub-farm)

Cotters have lived on the farm since the end of the 1600's. Stølsvik was in use in 1724. In 1804, Stølsvik was given a value and entered into the tax register.

He married Anna Gunnulfsdtr of Hustoft Farm, sub-farm 9b, January 17, 1754. She was born in 1727 and died in 1807. Ivar was called Sandvik when they were married. Likely he was boy at the farm who settled down as a tenent when he married the farmgirl from Hustoft. Ivar was still on the small farm in 1801.

Included with the people living on this sub-farm in 1758 was Jorunn Eriksdtr. She was born sometime between 1721 and 1725. She died on this farm in 1776.

This sub farm was partitioned from sub-farm 1 in 1763, when Lars assumed ownership. Lars took over half Mykje farm while his father was still alive. It was a 6 bucket sub-farm. Lars Toresen was sheriff for many years. He inherited and was owner of half the farm with the probate of his parents in 1779.

Brønla married a 2nd time to Hans Anderssen of Hinderåker farm, sub-farm 13. Hans and Brønla had no children. [genealogical note of interest: the son from this marriage, Tore, married the daughter of Hans Anderssen's 1st marrage, Bolla. Tore and Bolla are the maternal grandparents of Hans Ivarson HINDERAKER.]

She is documented as Brynhild Knutsdtr, when referenced in her second marriage to Hans Anderssen of Hinderaker. There were no documented children from the second marriage. ¹

Hans Anderssen married twice. His 1st marriage was to Anna Sjursdtr. Hans and Anna had 7 children. His second marriage was to Brynhild Knutsdtr in 1790. Brynhild was born in 1743 and died in 1817. She was the daughter of Knut and Ingeborg from Myklebust farm. She was also the widow of Lars Toresen from Mykje farm.

He took over the 6 bucket [literally] farm formerly owned by Tore Pedersen and inherited his father's 12 bucket farm. He, therefore, settled on this 18 bucket sub-farm. In 1798, however, he sold part of his farm and after that actively farmed the remaining 6 bucket sub-farm. In 1802, he sowed 2 ¼ barrels and harvested 14 barrrels of grain. He owned 1 horse, 2 cows and 4 sheep.

Ørland Farm in Sand Parish

Gunnulf Kristensen lived on Ørland farm in 1730 but sold it to Torbjørn Ommundsen from Tengesdal in 1733. Gunnulf bought a farm at Hustoft in Imsland in 1733 but he did not live there long.

Hustoft Farm in Tysvær Parish

9th Farmer. Gunnulf Kristensen's will was probated 30 July 1733.

In 1724, Gunnulf married Marta Roaldsdtr. She was not mentioned as being married at the probate of her father's will in 1722. It is likely that she was married a short later, and in Imsland Parish, but had no children, for when she married Gunnulf, she was a widow. Their children were likely baptized in Vikedal parish.

Gunnulf was a conscripted soldier for five years; two of those years he was on active duty in the eastern part of Norway. He had been at home for 3 years before he moved to Ryfylke. Ola Kristensen was Gunnulf's brother. Ola lived at Ringstveit farm, sub-farm 11. Gunnulf had been a short time at Ørland Farm in Sand.

Gunnulf bought the farm from the former sub-farm owner. The letter of credit for the purchase was dated. 22 February 1733. This is the same year that the family moved to the farm. Gunnulf died four months later. He had been sick for a year and a half.

In 1734, Marta next married Knut Pålsen.

In 1733, Gunnulf and other co-owners sold Hinderå to the church, according to the tax collector, Nils Hundt.

In 1723, he sowed 11 barrels of grain and fed 4 horses, 24 cows and 30 sheep. Lars was church warden 1710 - 1712.

Østen Danielsen FOSEN was born about 1641. His parents came from Vikedal where Øystein was born. He died in 1722 in Fosen, Avaldsnes (Karmøy), Norway. Østen and his first wife lived for some years at Lervik in Tysvær number 10 before they moved back to Fosen. He took over the Fosen farm, Bruk Nr. 1, from his mother and her third husband probably in the early 1680's. He owned the farm from 1690 until his death in 1722. He married first Sofie Toresdtr. and they had 4 children; he married second to Ales Bårdsdtr. and they had 2 sons.

Øystein Danielson was the sheriff of Hetland, the viking coastal defense unit from 1690 to 1711. He inherited 2 1/2 pound (old measurement) land at Fosen from his father. He got the mortgage deed to the 2 bucket (grain) Gismarvik farm and 1 old measurement in the Kallevik farm. In the census for 1706 it read: "Vibrandsøy Farm was worth 18 buckets (archaic) grain. Østen Danielson of Fosen, also had a homeplace on Vibrandsøy and was recorded as both the owner and operator." He was sheriff at Hetland while he lived at Fosen. In 1706, the census list said that Øystein Fosen loaned 300 silver coins to Halvor Skuleson of Vibrandsøy, towards the purchase of the mortgage deed of the island. Then Halvor died around 1710. His widow sold Vibrandsøy to Øystein who arranged it for his son-in-law. Halvor Svenson got the deed to Vibrandsøy, which was then owned by Øystein Danielson.

Before taking over the farm at Fosen sometime between 1680 and 1690, Østen and Sofie lived first for some years at Lervik Farm, sub farm 10, in Tysvær. Østen inherited 2 1/2 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Fosen and bought 2 1/2 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain from his brother Karl Åm in 1690. Therefore he was the sole owner of half Fosen Farm. In the fall of 1696 he bought a 30 bucket farm in Fosen from Paul Toresen. On behalf himself and his sister, he bought a 4 bucket farm from Rasmus Danielson Amdal (possibly his brother), an 8 bucket farm from Jon Danielson Årvik (possibly his brother), a 4 bucket farm from Daniel Danielsen Trosnavåg (possibly his brother), a 2 bucket farm from Isak Larssen, a 2 bucket farm from Johannes Bø and a 2 bucket farm from Lars Meland. He was sheriff for a short time after his stepfather, Daniel Matssen, died. Later, he was sheriff from 1690 to 1711. When his son, Daniel, married, he was given half the farm, which is why the farm was divided. The part Østen was settled with, shall after the land register from 1723 have our at 3 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain. When both the father and son died, Tore Tuastad (and father-in-law of Østein's daughter, Malena), the witness said that the whole the farm required 10 buckets of seed and would harvest 60 barrels of grain. They fed 3 horses, 22 heifers and 20 sheep.

Knut lived at Høye Farm for some years, during the 1660's and some of the 1670's, but he left and moved to Myklebust Farm.

Knut first lived for some years at Høye, before he finally, in 1673, came back to Myklebust farm and took over the land, formerly held by his parents. His son, Lars, took over after him. The family also lived at Hervik in Tysvær, sub farm 50. In 1685, Knut owned and operated the 18 bucket Myklebust farm. Knut was church warden 1679 - 1680.

farmer 51. On this same farm, a Knut Pedersen who was married to Susanna Larsdtr was reported as the next farmer. They lived on this farm in 1711 and had a servant girl named Gunhild Torsdtr. It is very likely that Knut Pedersen can be called into question and that Knut Halvorsen and Knut Pedersen are actually the same man.

Susanna married Knut HALVORSEN ²² circa 1675. Knut was born circa 1640 in Farm 118 - Myklebust, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway ^²² and died after 1711 in Farm 118 - Myklebust, Avaldsnes Parish, Karmoy, Norway.

Ola was married twice. His 1st marriage was to Margrete Danielsdatter, who died in 1731. His 2nd marriage was to Torborg Rasmusdatter, who was born c.1712 and died in 1767. She was the daughter of Rasmus Halvorsen and Ingeborg Larsdatter from Meland, sub-farm 1. Ola and Margrete had 3 children.

Ola and Margrete lived first at Kolstø farm, which they had taken over from the parents of Margrete. In 1701, he bought the farm of Gabriel Gabrielsen at Visnes and, thus, owned all of Visnes farm. Half of this was sold on 9 April 1701 to Ola Kolstø who moved here to the 18 buckets (grain) farm, which he bought, with the household. In order to clear the deed, Ola had to mortgage some the property he owned at the seaside, at Snik. He gave 60 riksdaler (silver coin) for half Visnes.

They remained living at Visnes until 1729. In 1729, they sold Visnes to next farmer and moved to South Våge (Øygarden) which they also owned. See more on household and they economic opportunity their in saga on Våge Søndre (Øygarden).

In 1723, the Ola Ingebretsen household lived at Våge Søndre farm. He farmed the whole farm. He sowed 6 barrels and harvested 30 barrels. He owned 2 horses, 7 heifer and 4 sheep. He was called Ola Visnes at Våge Søndre.

Ola and Margrete lived first at Kolstø which they had taken ownership of from Margrete's parents. On 9 April 1701 Ola bought a quarter share of Visnes farm, which he very soon doubled in size. Margrete and Ola living at Visnes from 1720 to 1723, when they moved to Våge Søndre farm. They lived the remainder of their lives at Våge Søndre farm.

Ola must have been the richest person in Avaldsnes Parish at this time. In the autumn of 1695 he bought all of Vikingstad farm of Torvastad Parish from Anne Marie Heidemann, the widow of council justice H.C. Hiorth. Two months later, he bought a 15 bucket share of Kvalavåg farm from Karen Larsdotter, the widow of Kristoffer Anderseen. The following year he bought all of Våge Søndre farm. Therefore, he owned the farm on which he later lived and operated. But that was not enough. He also bought Ferkingstad farm in Skudenes Parish in 1694 from the widow of Morten Seehusen in Stavanger. This he later sold it to the Ferkingstad farm tenant farmers in 1707. Visnes farm he sold to Kristoffer Hanssen in 1720.

Daniel, the son of Ola and Margrete was not healthy. Therefore in 1726, Ola drew up a contract between himself and his son-in-law Ola Matland. In that contract, it stated that Ola Matland should be Daniel's guardian and would also inherit Våge Søndre, when Ola Ingebretsen died.

In the records about Visnes farm, Ola was called the brother-in-law of Knut Salvesen. Knut Salvesen was from Øvra Haugo farm in Torvastad.

In 1732 Margrete Danielsdatter is dead and Ola marries again. He married Torborg Rasmusdatter. So that there is no question about the inheritance rights to Våge Søndre, Ola give his new wife the tiny farm of Østhus in Hetland, a viking coastal defense area in Avaldsnes Parish. He spends his remaining year living in a small cottage on Våge Søndre farm.

The probate of Margrete Danielsdtr. tells of their prosperity. The estate was valued at 1460 silver coins (riksdaler) and 2 ort (old currency) and 4 penny. The debt was little and the inheritance of 1437 silver coins (riksdaler) and 2 ort (old currency) and 4 penny was divided between Ola and his two children.

In the settlement of the estate, there were also silver pieces. Among other things, there was a silver pot, previously owned by Paster Christen Schaaning (Parish Priest of Avaldsnes Parish) and his wife. The two silver pots were valued at 40 silver coins (riksdaler) a piece. One of the mentioned pots had their name on the side of it: Ole Ingebretsen and Margrete Danielsdatter 1713. The other mentioned pot included the following names on the side of it: Christian Bentzen and Miss Søfrensdatter, and on the other side : Bent, Søren, Jakob, Christian, Jens, Daniel, Rasmus and Klaus - Christian's children, with the date 1646 on it. There was also a little silver pot with the name Christian Ditlef Christensen Hegelund on it. How they came to have these family pieces, is uncertain.

Torborg Ramusdtr married a 2nd time, to Engel Ellefsen of Søra Velde farm. She had many child with Engel.

Lars married three times. His first marriage was to Siri Gudmundsdtr. In 1695, he married, for the 2nd time, to Brita Hadlesdtr. She died in 1712. She was the daughter of Hadle and Siri of Hamra in Erfjord, sub farm 6. In 1714, he married, for the 3rd time, to Lukresia Olsdtr, the daughter of Ola and Sissel of Kjøllevik in Strand. After Lars died, she married again, to Osmund Osmundsen, the next farmer at Gismarvik. From these marriages, 11 children were born .

He bought the deed to inheritance from Tore Omundsen of Gismarvik Farm, March 1, 1682. On 14 March 1682, Lars got the deed to Gismarvik and settled onto the land. He bought the inheritance rights to the estate for 24 bucket (grain). In 1697, he owned a 20 bucket farm in Øvre Førland in Tysvær with Knut Knutsen in Vals subparish. His Haukås Farm was left to one of his living daughters. In 1717, he asked his son, Gudmund, to come home from the sea and take over the farm. Gudmund was in the navy. Before Gudmund could return, however, he died that year in a shipwreck.

Lars was a little of a reckless. He was involved in many lawsuits and made lots of money, because the verdicts went in his favor. For a while, he also had a household at Hamra Farm in Erfjord Parish which his son, Lars, later took over. He moved there and established a household from 1711 to approximately 1720. In 1720 he was a shareholder at Gismarvik.

In the early 1700's, they were the sole owners of the farm. In 1723, they were the sole owners of Gismarvik, sowed 7 barrels of seed and harvested 30 barrels of grain, fed 2 horses, 16 heifer and 6 sheep.

In cir. 1671, Nils Matsson divided his property at Litlasund in Torvastad into two equal parts. His daughter, Malene and her husband, Knut got a 4 bucket farm.

In 1671 was Knut Sæbo testified before the court against Tore Håland about a [glip?] that Knut had taken from Tore and used for a years time. The court verdict was a compromise.

From 1690, it was stated that a widow was living in their guesthouse. She was the widow of vicar Thomas Thomassen Wegner of Torvastad Parish. She was named Anna Willumsdtr and had two step children, Johannes Wegner and Elisabet Wegner (Knut and Malena's grandchildren, through their daughter, Marta).

Daniel and Malene lived first, from 1639, on the farm Hapnes in Vikedal district (Viking coastal defense unit), which Malene's father had previously leased for the use of the children. They used also Dokskar somewhat further up in the valley from 1642. (Both Hapnes and nearby Dokskar are on the south side of Yrkjeforden and north of Nedstrand.) Later they also leased Hamn down by the fjord (probably the Hamn in Skjold on the east side of Skjoldafjorden?). It was the king which owned these farms. For Daniel it was surely the "overflow sawmill" at Dokskar that was of greatest interest. (This was probably a sawmill that could be used only in the spring when there was enough water available.)
They lived at Hapnes until 1665. Then they moved to Sande in Hjelmeland which they had bought in 1652. But in 1666 Daniel made an equal exchange with the priest at Hjelmeland, Jens Simonsen Morsing, which was married to a daughter of Gudmund and Marta Fosen (earlier owners of the Fosen farm). Daniel obtained all of the Fosen farm that had been left to Jens' wife. In exchange, Jens got property that had belonged to Daniel in Sande, Lerstøl (Larstøl) and Kro (all in Hjelmeland). Daniel and Malene moved then to Fosen and took over whole the farm, but in the following year, in 1667, was he found dead in the meadow. When Daniel died, his estate included the farm property in Fosen plus property in Vestre (in Skjold), Seltveit (in Jelsa), Tjørdal (possibly Tordal in Tysvær?) and Øvreland (in Vikedal). After Daniel's death, Malene married the next farmer to take over the Fosen farm. Daniel was sheriff in Hetland Viking coastal defense unit (which got its name from the Hetland farm just to the east of Fosen - according to Tysvær Vol. 1).
There is some disagreement regarding Daniel's parents. The Slooper book indicates that his father was Rasmus Haakonsen Hapnes who was mentioned in Vikedal in 1603. The Bygdebok for KARMØY: AVALDSNES II, indicate that his parents were the Rev. Rasmus Olsen from Rennesøy and his wife Katrine Johannsdtr. He was married to Malene Jonsdtr. RAUNES (RÖGENES).

Malene had 9 children with Daniel. After Daniel, her first husband died, she married that same year to Daniel Matssen who was the brother to the tax collector in Ryfylke Søren Matssen at Hesby. Malene and this second Daniel had no children. This second Daniel lived only a short time with Malene on the Fosen farm. Like Malene's first husband, this Daniel was chosen to be the sheriff in Hetland viking coastal defense unit in 1668. On 3 Jul 1668, during a dispute in a local court hearing he was stabbed and killed. Malene then married a third Daniel, Daniel Kristensen, son of the vicar Christen Bentsen Schaaning and Mette Sørensdtr. of Avaldsnes. This third Daniel came to Fosen in 1670. This Daniel, like Malene's previous 2 husbands, also served as the sheriff in Hetland viking coastal defense, and did so into the 1680's. He and Malene turned the Fosen farm over to Malene's oldest son from her first marriage, Østen Danielsen, who owned the Fosen farm Bruksnr. 1 from 1690 until 1722. (Avaldsnes bygdebok) ⁴²

Gard number 128, Øvre Hauge, subfarm 5 - Johannes Knutson Family

It is doubtful that Johannes Knutson is from Øvra-Haugo. Living at Ner-Haugo in 1603, was a farmer named Knut, but there is no evidence that he is the father of Squire Johannes Knutson Øvra-Haugo. Johannes has a daughter who is married to farmer, Ramus Hansson of Bø Farm. [On they are some ættarsamband between the old ones Bø-ættene and Johannes say family formerly, will maybe become klårlagt with time.] Preliminary, his origin is unknown. They are neither sure that Johannes Knutson is a relative of Rasmus Øvra-Haugo from 1603 or of this Rasmus - Bø Farm connection. That Johannes was married to Herborg Matsdtr of Sveen, the local historian is positive. Let me provide the proof (see Berge Velde: Velde and Espeland and those that married into the family). The parents of Herborg were Mats Jonson of Sveen and Adelus Torsteinsdtr. They [Berøen] have many farms both in Hordaland and Rogaland. The probate record, of Jon Gauteson of Sveio, who died in 1609, stated that Mats Jonson and his heirs got the farm Sveio, 6 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Folkvord, 2 pail grain in Hokla, 16 field butter in Haga pasture (archaic) and 1/2 old measurement, softened? (mør) In intelligence grain in Ervesvåg. Among the heirs of Mats Jonson was his wife, Adelus Torsteinsdtr. She later remarried; the minister in Torvastad, Rasmus Pederson.

Mr. Rasmus (Pederson) in Torvastad and co-owners have on hand, 6 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Folkvord in 1617, and in 1624 is this inheritance share together with the farm Sveio which Nils Matsson Sæbø and Johannes Knutson Øvra-Haugo inherited. Nils Matsson and Herborg Haugo were siblings, and their mother lived her later years in the Torvastad Rectory. The Minister Rasmus Pederson died around 1622. Probate was held about 24 or 25 October 1622. Johannes Øvra-Haugo inherited 1 pound (old measurement) grain in Folkvord and Nils Sæbø 1/2 pound (old measurement). In Sveio, Johannes was the owner of 1 old measure of land (based on taxes paid in butter) and 1/2 pound (old measurement) grain. Nils Sæbø got an equal amount, altogether they owned the entire Sveio Farm. In the farm Promontory in Bremmes, Mr. Rasmus had 1/2 an old measure of land (based on taxes paid in butter) which in 1619 was transferred to his wife Adelus Torsteinsdatters and her descendants. It shows was that in 1646, she had two children, Nils Sæbø and Herborg Haugo (or who it says: Johannes Haugo) who owned shares in the inheritance. Adelus and Mats Sveen had another daughter named Magdalena. She lived at Høyland at Stord and was married to Knut Holst. 15 Apr 1656, Johannes Knutson Haugo was summoned by Samuel Huglen, son-in-law to Magdalena, who held? (krov) 1/2 an old measure of land (based on taxes paid in butter) in Sveio and 1/2 old measurement in Ervesvåg, inherited land from Mats Johnson and Adelus Torsteinsdtr. This was allegedly later transfered to Johannes Knutson. He send his two son-in-law's. Ingebret Litlasund of Skåre and Rasmus Bø of Torvastad, before the court. They were allowed to bring forward a handwritten document from deceased Knut Holst to Johannes Knutson, but [arvetilhøva] come not clear of these handwritten documents. In 1649 used Johannes Knutson 21 pail in Øvra-Haugo.

In the year 1657, Johannes is dead. Herborg Hauge is the owner forward until 1670. In these later years of life she lived with her daughter, Turid Littlasund, in Skåre. She died around 1670 and died suddenly. In 1680, revived memories of the sudden death were used to blame, the daughter Turid, of witchcraft. At Litlasund, there was much prosperity, and the tax collector would have gotten much land if Turid was judged to bonfire. The known historian, Tormod Torfæus, defended her and managed to kept her safe from a sentence of death; she was exonerated. Torfæus showed to a [skotsmål] which was a Torvastad congregation, that she was the result of her mother, Herborg Hauge. That at Øvra-Haugo Gard, 29/9 1641, she was well refered to. He told the [skotsmål] who Turid was got from them three [sjelesyrgliarane] which the witnesses showed that she was a decent and honorable person.

I did not find probate document for Johannes Knutson. But widow Herborg is recorded as the owner of 1 an old measure of land (based on taxes paid in butter) in Sveio, 3 pound (old measurement) grain in Åkra, 3 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Hago in Håland at Jæren and 1 know grain in Ytreland. Son-in-law Ingebret Litlasund has gotten a part of the estate. The other son-in-law, Rasmus Bø, is dead before 1661. His wife has remarried to Tore Tuastad who has gotten all of Folkvord.

Berge Velde tells (us): "Herborg Hauge owned more goods in Haga pasture (archaic) than the heirs originally got from Mads Jonson, and etterkvart samlar she to was more of this inheritance (slektsgodset). In 1661, she owned 3 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) (18 pail), according to the bailiff's accounts for Jæren 1668-70 whole 26 pail grain. The probate record of Jon Gauteson in 1609 shows that he had the owned 10 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) (60 pail) grain in Haga pasture (archaic). Of this inheritance, Herborg Hauge consequently had 26 buckets which she partly must have changed to was or bought, then this is more than Mads Jonson his heirs got from this farm".

In 1670, all legal claims concerning the farm are settled. In 1676, Gunnar bought a second, 6 bucket farm, from his brothers, but it is not said what the name of his brothers were. In 1680 he obtained a letter of credit to purchase 2 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Grinde in Skjold, and in 1684, he obtained the mortgage on a 16 bucket farm in Grinde from a man who was called Johannes Alvsen. His son Knut, took over the farm at Førre. Johannes is likely from Alvseike in Vats (1c) and lived in Grinde. Johannes Alvsen's daughter likely married Truls, the son of Gunnar, and lived in Grinde. ³⁸

Ingebret Gudmundson was the fifth farmer (1641-1670). Ingebret was born circa 1604 and died in 1670. He was the son of Gudmund Ingebretsson. He was from Rossabø Farm, sub-farm 8.

The widow Gunvor Håvardsdtr married Ingebret. She was daughter of Håvard at Førre Farm, sub-farm 1 in Avaldsnes subparish. She was also the widow of Knut Olsson. Knut and Gunvor had owned the farm earlier

Tyri (Turid) Johannesdtr married the widower Ingebret. She was the daughter of Johannes Knutsson and Herborg Matsdtr. They owned Øvra Haugo Farm, sub-farm 5 in Torvastad subparish.

In 1641, the tax was two pound (old measurement) grain. Ingebret was a prosperous man. In 1670 he owned the following farms:

5 October 1652, Ingegret Gudmundson Litlasund got the mortgage to a 1 bucket farm at Støle Farm. Documents were recorded the following year. He must have borrowed money from former owner. A debt owed by the owner provided Ingebret the opportunity to take over the farm. 14 June 1662, he recorded a letter of credit for the purchase from Knut and Omund Erikssøner for the 1 bucket farm at Støle, dated 10 January 1662.

Debt problems could happen to anyone. 24 September 1681, an expedition obligation of 50 dalar (old norwegian currency) to the tax collector Niels Christensen caused Tyri Johannesdtr Litasund to be in debt. ⁴⁵

In 1626 he receives the mortgage of "21 sm 2 huder" (value of land indicating size and worth) of Raunes for 300 Riksdaler (silver coin) from Gerlef Nettelhorst. In 1628 he gave up his citizenship in Stavanger and probably took over Raunes from Oluf Torgersen (the previous farmer here). When Jon bought Raunes, he probably got the right of inheritance to the farm, such as is recorded for him in 1649. Then the rights to inheritance or "odelstida" was 30 years. As he bought the farm in approximately 1628/30, he settled securely at "odelsjorda" ("freehold" = land held under allodial law) in 1660. In the 1660 "odelsjordeboka" (rights of inherited land book) he is mentioned as the owner of the farm. Berge Velde believes that Jon managed a lumber business (tømmerhandel) with a Scotchman (skottane). It was quite common in Ryfylke at the time. In 1641 he (Jon) was sentenced for illegal commerce (kjøpmannskap) that he divided/partitioned the year before, this being when be bought, with four others, 500 barrels of grain from a Scot. He himself had bought 15 English barrels of beer for 75 Riksdaler (silver coin) and silk cloth for 6 Riksdaler (silver coin). It is natural (?) to see this as a sort "compensation" for tømmerhandel (lumber commerce). The same year he was sheriff ("lensmann") and he was until 1661. In 1653 he summoned Ole Kyle of Sjernarøy for 1/2 "laup" (unit of value) rent in Kyle farm for whole 26 years. (Records indicate that) He had the many purchases and sales of property throughout these years. In 1657 he paid 16 Riksdaler (silver coin) in sheriff's tax. Only one sheriff in Ryfylke had such a large tax.
It must have been a big wedding ("storbryllaup") in 1623 then he married. Jon's father was subpoenaed (or taken to court) to pay for 2 barrels of beer which Jon had ordered for his "festarøl" (marriage engagement celebration)! (Jon apparently had not paid for the beer.) Jon's widow stayed at Raunes until she died about 1673. That year she gave the mortgage to her grandson (son's son) Nils Larsen. In 1663 she had Knut as a servant, the following year was the boy Tjerand Olsen, 30 years old, and Peder Torbjørnsen 24 year old bachelor. In 1666 she had her daughter's son (grandson) Laurits 7 years with her.
It was a sawmill (water powered) but probably not lumber in 1661 (that was Jon’s business). The timber was for the most part bought in Suldal, "approximately 8 Norwegian miles (1 = 11295 m) from there". At the sawmill they could cut 300 planks. In 1668 they planted/sowed 12 barrels of grain and raised 36 heifers and 3 horses (on this farm). There was a grain mill and firewood lot for home use. Then is it said it could cut 2000 planks every year at the water powered sawmill (these usually functioning best or only during high water in winter and spring). Also it is now written that the timber must "be purchased from afar." The abandoned farm Kalrag is mentioned under Raunes, it lays on the other side fjord with/near Stokka. At the farm was a "husmannsplass" (small leased farm house or cotters place), "kaldis Wigen." (Vats, pp. 43-44)

Truls followed Kristoffer in the tax registers. The name of his wife is unknown, but she was still alive in 1645. He is not mentioned as one of the sons of Gunnar Førre above, but there seems to be a connection. Kristoffer Gunnarsen at Sandvik had a son named Truls. Truls Gunnarsen have 3 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) grain in Førre both in 1617 and in 1624. In 1649 he used 3 1/2 vetter (old measure = 6 spann) winter (archaic) on the 1 bucket farm.

Halvor is mentioned as one of two farmers at Myklebust in 1563. He is the patriarch of a big and extensive family in Avaldsnes, and particularly in Førdesfjorden. He is taxed as the owning farmer in 1563. Upon his death, he left, as part of his estate, the following farms:

Myklebust in Avaldsnes
Karmsundet in Vindafjord.
Øvre Espevoll in Vindafjord.

Myklebust is one of those farms in which there is a long succession of the same family who were both owners and the farmers, beginning in the middle of the 1500's. In 1563, a man lived at Myklebust farm who was called Halvor. He was a land owning farmer, who owned a portion of the entire farm. After Halvor's death, there was a legal claim made on the inheritance rights of the farm previously owned by Halvor. The farm, apparently, was inherited by Truls, the 3rd son of Halvor. The oldest son, Bård, filed a suit, claiming that the farm belonged to him.

The lawsuit remained open until 1619. It was settled in favor of the younger son, Trul Halvorsen, who got the right to own the farm over Bård's son, Trul's nephew, Elling Bårdsen. Later can we can follow the descendants of Tuls on the farm to current times, and descendants of Halvor are spread all over Karmsud district.

Jon lived at Førre on the farm that he inherited from his father, but was dead before 1600. Peder Døle mentioned in the biographical sketch of Håvard, Jon's father, testified in 1674 that Jon died in a plague. The next farmer was possibly his widow?

1606: Stiguor is mentioned only this one year in tax registers. It is possible that she was the widow of Jon Håvardsen sub-farm owner with the name Steinvor? But this person is not identified.
